Update on Windsor Mill

Every day after CrossFit, I drive by.

It’s a sad site:

Historic Windsor Mill in Downtown Windsor, CO

Hollow.

Empty.

Forlorn.

The Windsor Mill. Destroyed by an arsonist(s) on August 6th, 2017.

This weekend The Coloradoan ran an update story on the investigation. Windsor Police Chief Rick Klimek said the case is ongoing as is the investigation. They are still soliciting leads from the public. People with information about the mill fire can contact the police department at 970-674-6400 or windsorgov.com/89/Police. The ATF is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Blue Ocean Enterprises, the owner of the Mill site, is still committed to re-building the site. However, there is no time frame. As one can imagine. Starting from square one is challenging indeed.

However, hopes and dreams are still alive.  The Mill will return, becoming once again a vibrant part of our downtown and community.

The future is bright indeed!

Town of Windsor’s Kindness Week

The Town of Windsor community is invited to participate in Windsor’s second annual Kindness Week February 11-17.  Residents are encouraged to kick off the New Year in a positive way.

The daily challenges include:

  • Sunday: Service Sunday, kick off the week with a good deed or act of service. Drop off donations for the Windsor Severance Food Pantry — nonperishable food items, diapers and other baby items, or school supplies — at Safeway and King Soopers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Monday: Senior Smiles, brighten the day of a Windsor senior citizen.
  • Tuesday: Reach Out and Write, connect with someone who has impacted your life. Printable note cards will be available on the Town of Windsor’s Facebook page (facebook.com/windsorgov).
  • Wednesday: Share the Love — Pay it Forward, extend kindness to others rather than a person that may have directly helped you.
  • Thursday: Thank an Educator, recognize a teacher, mentor, or school staff member that has made a difference.
  • Friday: Recognize First Responders and Veterans, thank you banners for Windsor first responders and veterans will be available to sign at the Community Recreation Center and Clearview Library.
  • Saturday: Neighborly Nod, do something kind for your neighbor — shovel their walk, bring them goodies, or just spend time together.

I love how the Town is promoting good deeds to others.  How awesome!

Residents are encouraged to share their stories on Windsor’s Facebook page.

Leave a comment below as well.  I’d love to hear your stories!!

I Wanna Be a Hawk…

Sitting in a tree.  Scanning the ground for your next meal to scurry out.

Just sitting.

Sitting and being.

And then flying!  Over everything.

Nothing else matters.

Just the wind beneath your wings.

Bald Eagles

I see bald eagles flying over King Soopers, my house, sitting in trees next to the roadway, soaring as they were meant to soar.  Hawks fly over my house almost daily as a couple have taken to living in our neighborhood.  They are seen everywhere perching:  on light posts, trees, wires, signs, etc.

There is something so majestic about these birds that I think:  If I could be one animal for one day, I’d be a raptor.  No doubt about it.  I’d love to see with their eyes.  Fly with their wings.  Dive with their speed.  Sit and watch and wait.  In the moment.  Always.

One of my favorite places and charities is the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program, a non-profit who rescues injured raptors, heals their wounds, and re-introduces them back into the wild.  They also will keep the ones who cannot be re-introduced to the nature of their injuries.  And tragically but humanely they put down injured raptors brought in who cannot be saved (I myself had this experience many years ago when I found a hawk in the road, picked it up, and brought it in (that’s her below–a Northern Harrier I was told.  It was sad but it didn’t suffer.) Female or Juvenile Northern Harrier

If you love raptors as much as I do and are looking for an amazing charity, please consider this program.  They have a phenomenal education outreach program as well, visiting schools, libraries, and anywhere you wish in order to educate us all on their lifestyle and habitat needs.

I’m Grateful I Can Run for Town Board…

This is my first foray into any type of public office.  It’s been on my heart for a while now and the timing is right.

So far, it’s been fun.  I’ve learned a ton about what’s happening in Windsor, CO (the greatest place to live in my humble opinion).  I’ve met some amazing people.  I’ve opened up to new opportunities, experiences, and events.

I’m extremely grateful I live in a country such as the United States where I can run for public office and represent others who put their trust in me.  It’s extremely humbling and amazing all at the same time.

I want to thank all of my supporters for such an opportunity.

Win or lose this has been an amazing ride!

The Controlled Chaos of Basketball Assessments…

The Town of Windsor likes to assess children before most sports in order to fairly balance out the teams.

Last night was basketball assessments.  And the scene looked like this:

Basketball Assessments at Windsor Community Recreation Center

This was before we started, but it gives you a sense of the number of kids.

This is my first season as a head coach volunteering to coach my son’s basketball team.  Admittedly, I know very little about basketball but when you get an email, saying they need a coach or your son’s team may be cancelled, you have to step up.  So I did.  With the caveat of I know very little and I do work some Saturdays.

The Town said fine so I said I’d do it.

Behind all this mayhem, the boys were sweet and cooperative.  It was a fun night, and I feel like I met half of the 5th grade boys in Windsor.  I’m definitely looking forward to a fun season!
