I Had to Put My Dog Down Today

Today, I made one of the hardest decisions in my life — I had to put my dog down.

Beginning in June, my Great Dane started having problems walking. It slowly got worse. It got to the point where we had to pick him up, and it took two of us to do so. Then, sometimes, he’s fall over.

We took him to the vet one month ago. They gave him nerve pills; it did not work.

A few days ago, he could not stand up by himself; his front paws quit working.

I called the vet; they got him in; we put him down.

It’s a sad, sad day when you have to take a life.

I know it was the right decision, but it doesn’t make it any easier.

He’s happy now. With my other dogs and cat in heaven. He can run again. And play again. And just be a dog.

  2. I recently had to do the same for our 16 year old Lab who was rescued from the mountains. She was old but was eating very well then she suddenly couldn’t walk then just lay down and wouldn’t move. We took her to the vet and that was our only alternative 🥲🥲 I’m sorry, maybe yours met up with Ruby, and our other heartbreak Rubin with others before that. 🙏❤️🙏😇

  6. So very sorry for your loss, Jen! It tears your heart out when you lose a member of your family and our dogs are our fur babies! It’s even worse when it comes to the point where we have to do the kind and loving thing and put them to rest. Tears are welling up in my eyes as I write this! Because we lost our little Winnie back in September after 9 years (a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel – blenem – their lifespan is an average of only 10 years.) We were facing having to make the same decision you had to make but she died at home with us loving her before that had to come to pass! It has to be one of the hardest decisions you have to make, to make the decision to let your beloved fur baby go because they are in pain and it is the right thing to do – for them. My hear goes out to you, My Dear!
